Stephen Ankier completed a PhD in pharmacology at the School of Pharmacy in London (1967) and then joined Allen & Hanbury’s where he directed a preclinical unit to evaluate novel compounds in the search for new medicines. After joining Roussel Laboratories (1973), he was solely responsible for the preclinical and clinical pharmacological characterisation of disopyramide and organised the scientific and medical development of trazodone and loprazolam. He established and directed a clinical research unit for Charterhouse (1984), chaired the scientific meetings committee of the Society of Pharmaceutical Medicine (1990-1993) and, made major contributions to establishing four modules in pharmaceutical medicine and clinical pharmacology for the University of Surrey Masters programme as well as being a Module Director (1993-1998). After being awarded a Master of Laws in medical law (2001), he taught medical law in relation to clinical research and authored the innovative book ‘Medical Law and Research’ (first published in 2004). He has published 111 papers/reviews (sole author of 26) on pharmacology, pharmacokinetics and therapeutics and on medical law in relation to medical research.
